Laying the foundation

Founded in 1820, Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company made its livelihood mining coal and building canals to transport the coal to Philadelphia. As it grew, the company purchased thousands of acres of land bounded by abundant waterways that could supply power and avenues of transportation.

Creating the attractions

The Company also pioneered the development of recreational facilities for public use. Copying the Quaker practice of using the Poconos as the site of family summer retreats, the company built Split Rock Lodge and an adjoining ski slope on Lake Harmony in 1941 as an executive resort. When the lodge was sold, the ski resort was operated independently as Big Boulder Ski Area, the first commercial ski resort in the state. Big Boulder was also the site of the first commercial application of snowmaking, a process that assured the success of the ski industry in the Poconos.

Improving upon tradition

Today, Blue Ridge Real Estate Company, offspring of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation, holds large tracts of land in northeastern Pennsylvania, with approximately 9,000 acres of pristine forest and water front property bordered by national forests, state game lands and conservancy areas. By developing the land prudently Blue Ridge Real Estate Company seeks to ensure the long-term growth and prosperity of its Pocono Mountain home.

Today
